What practical means depends on your needs. These are mine:
- Work appropriate, including minimum wage work.
- Does not trigger sensory issues of mine. These are hard to pinpoint in some cases but it mostly rules out some fabrics.
- Easy to maintain. When my health is suffering, so does my capacity to deal with maintaining shit that shouldn’t be designed to need so much maintenance.
The Wardrobe
Tops
Black long sleeve base layer
Notes: Protects the arms from hot plates, covers tattoos, keeps you warm, useful in protests
Amount needed: 1-2
- This layer catches all your dead skin throughout the day. You'll want more than one.
Bottoms
Black slacks/trousers
Almost always appropriate to wear, commonly required in service work, widely available, useful in protests
Amount needed: 1-2
- Is it ideal to re-wear the same pair of pants frequently? No. But can you in a pinch? Yes.
Accessibility Aids
Extra shoelaces
- I use these instead of prosthetic device straps. They're cheaper and more versatile.
Glasses
Either prescription or sunglasses. Sunglasses can be included in the form of color-shifting lenses or clip-ons.
Amount needed: 2
- You don't want to be without a pair of glasses, even if they are outdated, if you need them for daily functioning.
Smartwatch
- If possible, I'm learning it's worth splurging on this, because the speed of its processing is the speed at which you become unsuspended in the moment. If the processing is slow, it's less trustworthy, and I find myself staring down at my watch for long periods waiting/hoping it'll complete processing successfully.
